Have you made a decision to start some gentle exercise to help your body to support you better and reduce aches and pains that you have been carrying around for a while?
You aren’t sure whether you are better off with Pilates or Yoga?
Have a look at the little overview of the two different methods that are recommended so often to help improve physical and mental health.
Pilates
The main goal of Pilates is to strengthen the core, improve posture, mobilise, stabilise, and elongate the spine and develop balance as well as overall strength. All exercises are done with movement and to a specific breath pattern which helps activate or relax certain muscles.
Pilates works from the centre of your body, the deep core, outward. It forces you to increase your body awareness and move from your core, resulting in a stronger body.
There are six key principles of Pilates: concentration, control, centering, breathing, flow and precision.
Due to these principles that are guiding the Pilates practice, you get a mind-time-out and relaxation effect as well, though there is no lying down relaxation.
Through frequent Pilates exercises, a flatter and firmer abdomen can be achieved. Pilates is more dynamic than Yoga, and while flexibility will improve in Pilates, it’s not a focus.
Pilates has some standing components at the start of the class; once you are on the floor you stay there performing your exercises, lying on your back, sides, front and in 4 foot kneeling and seated. There is no frequent on and off the floor – once you are down, you stay there.
Pilates restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit.
You want to feel your muscles talk/ burn gently whilst you are doing the exercises? You want to improve balance, mobility and strength? You find it hard to stay present when you are not busy doing something/ moving? You are looking to rehabilitate an injury or chronic back pain? You want to have a good laugh doing your new exercise program?

Yoga
Yoga provides a meditative environment for you to improve your overall quality of life.
It focuses on stress relief while improving your body.
Often, the poses are held for a period of time to give the mind and body time to get the benefit from the pose.
In a Feel-good yoga class you start on the floor, moving from lying down to standing – flow through a little vinyasa, do some standing poses and then work your way back down until you are lying back for relaxation.
One exception is Wednesday 6pm “Super simple doable yoga” which starts on the floor, stays there, ends with a couple of standing poses and finishes in lying down relaxation.
In a more strenuous class like Vinyasa, you flow from one pose to another in a vinyasa-flow with your breath, which requires a high level of concentration and can stimulate the cardiovascular system.
Quiet reflection and meditation are a large part of Yoga practice.
You want to feel your muscles stretch? You want to improve balance, flexibility and strength? You would like to find stillness to give yourself a break and re-charge with guided mediation and breathing exercises? You are looking to get to know yourself on a deeper level? You are interested to discover and understand the intimate mind and body connection when it comes to physical and mental health.
